Depending on the country you are from, there are different rules to consider when you are converting from an overseas drivers license to a New Zealand drivers license. Licenses from some countries only require a theory test, where other countries have to do both theory and practical exam.

You are allowed to bring Interpreter alongside

The best way to find out what the requirements are for your country is to ring New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) on 0800-822-422.
All countries have different rules and it is very important to know exactly what these rules are and how to apply them. We strongly recommend you take some practical driver training with one of our professional driving instructors.

All of our driving instructors are qualified with NZTA and are very familiar with the roads in New Zealand. Their mother tongue is English and they understand the difficulty you might have with the language. They are very patient and able to explain things methodically. More info on overseas conversions

INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS:

If you are visiting from another country or have recently arrived in New Zealand, and you have a current and valid driver license or international driving permit (IDP), you can drive for a maximum of 12 months from the date you arrive in New Zealand. (Each time you visit New Zealand, you may drive for a further 12-month period on a valid overseas driver license or IDP, as long as you stay for no more than a year at a time.) If you are driving using an IDP you must also carry your overseas license with you.

Note: if your license or IDP isn't in English, you must carry an accurate English translation issued by:

• a translation service approved by the NZTA (phone the NZTA's driver licensing contact centre on 0800 822 422 for a list of approved translation services), or
• a diplomatic representative at a high commission, embassy or consulate, or
• the authority that issued your license.

Note: if your driver license is not in English, an IDP in English may be acceptable as a translation.

If you don't have a current and valid overseas driver license or IDP then you cannot drive in New Zealand. If you want to drive then you must apply for a New Zealand driver license.
